Function
The parking brake is an essential part of the braking system. It works separately from the vehicle’s hydraulic braking system and is designed to stop a vehicle from rolling away when parked or when the vehicle has come to a stop.
The parking brake cable connects the parking brake lever within the cabin to the brake caliper, which mechanically operates the piston in the caliper by a lever attached to it.
The parking brake cable is made from a high-quality, multi-strand Bowden cable with galvanised steel fittings.
Cause of failure
Over time the parking brake cable can stretch. This can be felt at the parking brake lever as the engagement point moves further away from its resting position.
Damage to the outer housing will allow the ingress of water and road debris, gradually causing corrosion.
If one or more of the strands of wire that make up the parking brake cable were to break due to excessive corrosion, the smooth operation required to release or engage the parking brake would be compromised -
with the parking brake becoming ‘ceased’ on or off and not operating correctly.
If just one cable is found to be damaged or ceased, febi recommends that both cables are replaced for enhanced reliability.
