The ignition coil is made up of two sets of windings – both of which are wound around a soft, iron core. A switch installed upstream of the primary winding allows the circuit to be opened or closed. The current is sent across the primary winding where a magnetic field is created around the primary winding. Thereafter, the switch opens abruptly which then causes a variation in the magnetic flow. This is due to the difference in the potential between the windings and the core. A high voltage is then generated at the level of the secondary winding. This is then sent through the high tension connection to the spark plug.
There are several design variations of the ignition coil. Also, the technology used is dependent on a variety of criteria. Engine environment: temperature, installation, space allocated. Performance: current supply requirements, ability to filter interference.
