Cause of failure

Interestingly, the vehicle manufacturers listed above do not recommend a routine servicing schedule for the Haldex all-wheel drive coupling system.

Instead, this system is described as a “filled for life” or “non-serviceable item”.

However, it is common for the filter media to become overloaded by 50,000 miles (80,000 km) causing the hydraulic pump to fail.

Therefore - to prolong the life of the system - it is recommended to replace the Haldex coupling oil and filter every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 3 years, whichever comes first.

This reduces the risk of pump failure and increases the life of the Haldex coupling clutch pack and bearings.
