Function
The oil pan covers the bottom of the engine block and serves as a reservoir for the engine oil, before re-entering the engine’s lubrication circuit via the oil pump pick-up tube.
The oil pan is made from quality cold-rolled steel, using the stamping process.
Cause of failure
Because the engine oil pan is located at the lowest part of the engine, it can be exposed to various ‘knocks’ and ‘scrapes’ in every day driving. It is not unusual for the oil pan to make contact with traffic-calming speed bumps.
If these are hit at speed, the oil pan can be dented or ‘creased’, which causes the paint to crack and allows moisture and road debris to attack the unprotected steel.
After a period of time, the metal corrodes, resulting in a fine film of oil forming around the underside of the vehicle - as the leak increases, oil droplets will form and leave a stain on the ground underneath the vehicle.
The oil leak should be repaired as soon as it is noticed, by replacing the oil pan. It is also recommended that the engine oil and filter is replaced at the same time.
